Oman International Container Terminal were crowned champions of the 2014 SOHAR Cup – SOHAR Port and Freezone’s annual cup competition, following an enthralling match against their port rivals and fellow SOHAR tenants Orpic. The final game was held just over a week after the 2014 FIFA World Cup concluded in Brazil, with this year’s tournament intended to promote teamwork and healthy living.

The opening exchanges of the match had all the hallmarks of a final, with both teams being made to work hard for possession and neither team looking to give anything away. The game was eventually won 2-0 by the terminal operator outfit.

After the game, the trophy was presented by H.E. Al Sheikh Dr. Said Al Harthy, Wali of Liwa, who was also responsible for giving runner-up prizes to the Orpic team. After the cup presentation, SOHAR Freezone CEO Jamal Aziz handed out awards to the best outfield player, best goalkeeper, and top scorer of the cup, and both leaders were full of praise when discussing the spirit with which both teams entered the match.

“I would like to commend all of the teams that have taken part in the 2014 SOHAR Cup, and especially the finalists. If tonight’s game is any indication of the way each of you approaches your work, I am certain many positive things lie ahead for SOHAR Port and Freezone,” His Excellency remarked.

“In many ways, football is the lifeblood of Oman. It brings us together, and I am grateful to have been invited to come and watch what has been a thoroughly entertaining encounter. Without a doubt, our employees and those of our tenants are our greatest assets on and off the field,” added Mr. Aziz.

A record 32 teams entered this year’s cup competition, representing tenants and contractors plying their trade at SOHAR Port and Freezone, and SOHAR Port CEO Andre Toet outlined his hope for the cup.

“Football is a great way to keep fit and promote healthy competition. This approach has helped us sustain double-digit growth as a business, but the true message of the cup runs much deeper and I hope all of the players will carry a message of healthy living and daily exercise into their communities,” said Mr. Toet.
