A Logistics Network

SOHAR Port and Freezone is unique in that it is operated under one management structure. This means that the flow of business between the two entities is stable to support the logistics infrastructure and ambitions of Oman. Hence, SOHAR is an advantageous base for logistics operators in industries such as steel, food ceramics, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, FMCG and many more.

In fact, SOHAR adds incredible value to the Oman Logistics Strategy 2040 and to the overall economy. According to Customs Import/Export Statistics, around 62 percent of Oman’s total import in 2017 entered the country via SOHAR Port, and around 42 percent of the exported volumes in 2017 were transported via SOHAR. When considering value generation, SOHAR Port and Freezone directly contributed US$3.4 billion to the economy, which is equivalent to 4.8 percent of the total GDP of Oman.

As one of the main driving forces behind this growth, SOHAR Port and Freezone has become an ideal transhipment centre between East and West, as well as an important gateway to over 2.2 billion people across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. It has matured into a crucial contributor to a trade surplus of US$2 billion in Oman. To cater to increasing demand for warehousing, it has set aside more than 200,000m² for the development of general warehousing, cold storage and light industrial units. In addition, the new highway connecting Suhar directly to Saudi Arabia is due to open soon, which will then join the existing road network linking Suhar to the border of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with onward links to Abu Dhabi and beyond.
